2019 Denver Paper Fashion Show

 2019 Denver Paper Fashion Show

“Star Gazer”

The theme for the 2019 Denver Paper Fashion Show presented by One Club Denver was, “Flight Without Wings.” My design inspiration was the night sky. Like most people, it is easy to image flying through the night sky among the stars. With this inspiration in mind, I decided I wanted to create an outfit that did not look like paper…Oh, I forgot to mention, all designers use PAPER to create their looks. There is a 90/10 rule - 90% of the outfit has to be the sponsor paper, and 10% can be other materials.

Back to the outfit, like I mentioned, I wanted my outfit to not look like paper. I also wanted to challenge myself and make pants instead of a dress, which is a typical silhouette for the show. I decided to create a crop jacket, shirt, and culottes. I used practice paper to create my patterns and work on construction techniques. To make the culottes wearable, and easy for my model to get on and off, I used separating zippers at the side seams, centering them on the seam to hide them. The jacket and shirt were created by weaving strips of paper together, to allow for the most mobility. The jacket was then covered with hundreds of hand punched and hand painted stars. The culottes were also hand painted. The earrings were also made of paper and utilized an already made hoop earring. As the look came together, there was definitely a punk-David Bowie feel, which my model really brought to life.
